To help end homelessness for adult women in East King County by providing shelter, case management, life skills training, social services, and supportive permanent housing, offering a path from homelessness to stable independent living.

The Position
The role of Sophia Way On-Call Shelter Staff is to ensure the safety of both clients and volunteers while overseeing regular day and evening routines in the Day Center, Sophia's Place (21-bed night shelter), and/or the Emergency Women's Shelter. Candidates with experience in de-escalation, crisis intervention, and trauma-informed care models are preferred, and additional, ongoing training will be provided as part of the job. Additionally, On-Call Shelter Staff assist with keeping the shelter spaces clean and organized, and ensure that activities, incidents, and needs of the shelter spaces and clientele are communicated to the appropriate Sophia Way team members for assistance and follow-up.

On-Call Shelter Staff position is a part-time, non-exempt role.

Responsibilities:

The essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Maintain a safe, supportive environment within the shelter.
  • Monitor facility to maintain the safety of clients and shelter space.
  • Assist clients with shelter routines.
  • Support clients in following all shelter procedures.
  • Help clients work through conflict with others living in the shelter.
  • Keep shelter clean, restock supplies, and complete shelter laundry.
  • Communicate observations and interactions with clients to shelter management through documentation in daily log.
  • Set up meals, following all food safety guidelines.
  • Intervene in client crises.
  • Complete documentation for meal donations and as needed for client reporting.
  • Basic maintenance, organization, and cleaning of facilities.
  • Treat clients in a culturally sensitive manner.
  • Participate in program, Department, agency meetings, and relevant trainings as required, as well as inter-agency groups that provide assistance and advocacy to homeless women.
  • Adhere to agency policy, procedures, and professional code of ethics.
  • Complete all duties as assigned. Other duties as required.

Education and experience:

  • One year of experience working with the homeless population; experience working with homeless women preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience is sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job as listed above.

Qualifications


  • Ability to maintain clear personal and professional boundaries.
  • Ability to work effectively in a constantly changing and sometimes demanding or chaotic environment.
  • Experience working with a diverse population, with sensitivity to differences in culture, religion, sexual orientation, race, age, and physical and/or mental illness.
  • Ability to remain alert and on duty throughout duration of shifts.
  • Ability to respond calmly and responsibly in emergency and crisis situations.
  • Ability to communicate well both orally and in written form, and follow detailed instructions.
  • Basic computer skills including the use of Windows Office Suite programs.
  • Ability to accurately record information for the required client and staff documentation.
  • Ability to effectively interact with clients, co-workers, and volunteers with diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds and treat each individual with respect, dignity, and compassion.
  • Physical ability to lift at least 35 pounds on a regular basis; ability to sit, stand, bend, reach, and perform light cleaning duties.
  • Current food handlers permit, or ability to complete food handlers training immediately after hire.
  • Current driver's license.
  • CPR/First Aid certified or ability to complete training immediately after hire.
  • Recent TB test or ability to complete immediately after hire.

Position Reports to: Director of Client Services & Shelter Programs, Shelter Leads

Shifts Available:


  • One guaranteed shift (7:00 am - 3:15 pm, 3:00 pm -11:15 pm, or 11:00 pm-7:15 am) per month and the ability to pick up up to 8 additional shifts per month.

Covid-19: Proof of vaccination needed upon employment. If unvaccinated, weekly tests will need to be turned in to HR department.

Compensation: Starts at $23.00/hour; benefits include paid sick leave for all staff, paid PTO for full- and part-time staff.
