Purpose of Position:
- Optical Technician positions may vary in their Purpose of Position
- Optical Assembly
- Perform precision alignment, assembly, and testing of optical components and assemblies
- Perform system-level testing of assemblies for image quality (MTF, stray light, transmission, distortion, and other optical parameters)
- Set-up, calibrate, align, and operate metrology equipment
- Optical Inspector
- Inspect, clean, and test optical components
- Optical Fabricator
- Utilizes various machines including MRF, Optipro, Highspeed CNC, in the manufacturing of optics.
- Performs machine polishing on optics to ensure ability of parts to perform in application.
- Optical Polishing
- Utilize conventional polishing techniques to craft optics to standards
Day-to-Day Responsibilities:
- Optical Assembly
- Follow standard operating procedures, in a clean room environment, to assemble optical components
- Successfully interpret work orders, engineering drawings, and work instructions to guide assembly
- Use a variety of hand tools, precision measuring devices and other specialized equipment including vacuum equipment, digital indicators, torque wrenches, optical microscopes, height gages, Vernier gages, micrometers, and electronic testing fixtures
- Perform system-level testing of assemblies for image quality (MTF, stray light, transmission, distortion, and other optical parameters)
- Optical Inspector
- Visually inspect optics to ensure adherence to standards and quality regulations
- Utilize blueprints and hand tools to prepare optics for additional manufacturing process
- Record and chart data to improve manufacturing process
- Utilize blueprints, metrology equipment, standard operating procedures in inspection process
- Optical Fabricator
- Follows standard operating procedure for the fabrication process of optics
- Operates laps and equipment in a safe and efficient manner while utilizing proper PPE
- Inspect, measure and cleans optics
- Read drawings and metrology equipment to guide manufacturing process
- Test and inspect optics and optical systems
- Perform calculations, quality tests, inspection
- Follows established company rules, regulations, and maintains quality standards
- Optical Polishing
- Polish optics using pitch laps, working to 1/10 wave tolerances
- Use of test plates, interferometers, and optical inspection tools to ensure quality of workmanship
- Read blueprints, monitor processes, monitor, and chart data
- Perform calculations, quality tests, measurements, and inspections on optics
- Other duties as assigned
Hours of Work:
- Monday – Friday 2nd & 3rd Shifts + OT
- 2nd Shift: 2:00 PM – 10:30 PM
- 3rd Shift: 10:00 PM – 6:30 AM
Preferred Experience:
- Experience in optics manufacturing
- Experience working in a cleanroom environment
Education:
- High school education
- Associates or Bachelors in a STEM field is a plus
Work Environment:
- Indoor, climate-controlled work environment
- Various clean rooms require the use of PPE and gowning
