I. General Summary:

Lead team of buyers whose main responsibility is to procure some or all of the following commodities and component materials: production parts, stampings, welded assemblies, tooling, equipment, injection molded components, extrusions, and raw material (fabric, vinyl, resin, urethane, steel, adhesive, etc.) for multiple plants located in Canada, Mexico and USA. Develops a strategy to source upcoming production parts, while developing a cost standard to be able to derive costs and preselect supplier(s) based on QCDM Model (Quality, Cost, Delivery, and Management).

II. Essential Job Functions:

A. Develop and implement commodity strategies designed to strengthen supplier relationships in order to ensure continuous supply.
B. Manage all parts sourcing activity for new programs based on QCDM supplier evaluation.
C. Lead pricing, APR (Annual Price Review), and kaizen for assigned commodities to continually reduce costs and ensure successful on-time product launch while accomplishing TBA profitability.
1. Assess costs globally and develop cost standards.
2. Develop Global “should be” cost based on supplier and global Toyota Boshoku benchmarking.
3. Coordinate production quoting and negotiating for piece and tooling cost.
4. Coordinate ECI quoting/negotiating.
5. Develop Commodity Strategy, along with Gentani / Kadai list, to ensure profitability and positive result for APR (Annual Price Review).
6. Communicate internally to assure proper distribution of cost detail information.
D. Manage commercial relationship between supplier(s) and Toyota Boshoku America (TBA).
1. Acquire supplier cost breakdown data and validate details to confirm supplier quotes.
2. Lead negotiations and conclude contract establishment (blanket purchase orders) in a timely manner for key suppliers.
3. Drive VA /VE (Value Engineered / Value Added) activity from supply base at early development phase for new programs.
4. Champion critical events such as Major QA Issue and Risk Management Issues with current supply base.
5. Manage supplier performance, including the development of action plans to improve.
6. Benchmark, develop, and maintain supplier relationship.
E. Understanding Design Intent including Materials and Technical Process to Manufacture for assigned commodities utilizing Genchi Genbutsu (Go, see, and study).
F. Lead, coach, develop, and motivate buyers and administrative staff of assigned area(s).

III. Minimum Qualifications/Requirements:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, or related field required, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Master’s Degree is preferred.
  • CPM (Certified Purchasing Manager) designation is preferred, but not required.

Experience:

  • Greater than 6 years working in a commercial activity or purchasing related field for Tier I or Tier II automotive supplier-related company required.
  • Greater than 2 years of management/supervisory experience required.
  • Experience in automotive production part procurement or process engineering related to a similar field.

Personal/Technical Skills:

  • Basic understanding of the industrial equipment and manufacturing processes relating to plastics, metals, foam, and/or textiles.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of purchasing, manufacturing, production control, and/or materials management.
  • Thorough understanding of company product, trade terminology, and quality management and control systems (e.g., TS-16949) and techniques.
  • Ability to read components and assembly blue prints and drawings (including 2D/3D).
  • Experience in sourcing component parts or raw materials from drawings.
  • Basic working knowledge of GD & T (General Dimensioning and Tolerance)
  • Proven managerial and leadership ability.
  • Ability to plan, supervise, and perform functions of assigned areas.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Active listener with effective leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to work in a fast paced, multicultural work environment.
  • Ability to effectively build strong working relationships with internal and external customers including suppliers.
  • Ability to work effectively in both strategic and tactical roles.

  • Strong organization, planning, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to communicate and work well with all levels inside and outside of the organization.

Language Skills:

  • Ability to clearly and concisely communicate complex information in verbal and written English.
  • Japanese and/or Spanish would be helpful.

Computer/Software:

  • Previous experience working with integrated computer programs and/or applications. ERP System experience (e.g., Oracle) preferred.
  • Solid working knowledge and demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office and other computer-based applications (e.g., MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, MS PowerPoint, Lotus Notes/Outlook, Internet, etc.).

IV. Work Environment/Conditions:

Office: Open Office Environment, moderate noise level.
Plant: N/A
Travel: Must be willing to travel up to 25% of the time in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

V. Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the team member is required to talk, see, and hear. The team member must be capable of walking, sitting, and standing for extended periods of time. May be occasionally required to lift up to 30 pounds. Ability to sit and work on a computer for extensive periods of time is required.
