Principal Marine Science Instructor
Weekly Teaching Position 2023


Weekly Position: June 26 to August 14, Eight (8) One Week Marine Science Topic Sessions
Work Schedule: Monday – Friday 7:45 am – 5:00 pm with July 4 Holiday work required
Compensation/Week: $1,950.00 (includes documented 10 hours pre-program prep-time - applicable to
professional contact hours as allowed)




The mission of the Boothbay Sea and Science Center is the advancement of sailing, boating and ocean sciences
by minimizing economic and physical obstacles and further to develop independence, self-confidence,
teamwork and volunteerism in the participants. To inspire individuals to strengthen themselves and their
community through the enjoyment of the sea. BSSC’s vision is to provide a community sea and
science education center that offers equal and affordable access to the waterfront for youth through sailing,
boating, and marine science experiential learning programs and activities not provided by other regional
organizations.

BSSC is seeking individuals to teach weekly marine science topics who have experience in and passion for
teaching youth of all ages in the classroom and/or in outdoor settings. During selected week(s)*, this
position will be responsible for implementing BSSC’s curriculum of marine science related educational topics
with assistance from the Principal Waterfront Instructor, Sailing and Science Instructors. The Principal Marine
Science Instructor will add to and further develop existing marine science curriculum materials and is
encouraged to incorporate new educational materials and hands-on experiential learning activities related to
the topic taught during that weekly program. This position will co-lead the weekly staff meeting with the
Principal Waterfront Instructor to assign tasks to staff and schedule activities; will enforce BSSC policies and
safety procedures; will manage day to day operations related to implementing the marine science curricula
and activities in the classroom or out on the water; and is responsible for summarizing highlights at the end of
each week and contributing to articles for the local papers and social media.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach the week-long marine science curriculum topic(s), as contracted, that includes daily
hands on experiential activities on and off the water.

  • Collaborate with the Principal Waterfront Instructor on all daily activities to carry out the
marine science curriculum program goals.
  • Supervise and Assign daily tasks to staff; Science Instructors, Apprentices, and Volunteers.
  • Attend a weekly meeting with the President/Executive Director and Principal Waterfront
Instructor to coordinate activities and schedule on and off the water activities.
  • Oversee maintenance of all science equipment including daily cleaning, document necessary
repairs and weekly inspections of those items used during the week.
  • Attends BSSC staff meetings and assist with regularly scheduled BSSC events during

employment, including but not limited to: Friday cookouts, evening socials, fundraising events,
and any other activities that enhances family participation.

  • Completes and submits to the Executive Director participant Evaluations, all weekly program modules,
curriculums, and equipment inventory on the last day of employment.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Marine Science, Biology, Oceanography or a related Science
  • Two years teaching experience (K-12, minimum) or equivalent experience
  • Current First Aid, CPR and AED Certifications (required prior to the start of employment) *


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Teaching Certification or equivalent
  • Master’s degree or other in marine science, Biology, Oceanography or a related Science
  • SafeSport Certification (www.ussailing.org)
  • National Association of State Boating Law Administrators Boat Safety (www.boatus.org/maine/)

  • BSSC will reimburse partial (50%) Certification Fees (if applicable and only upon successful completion of the
course)

Other:
All BSSC staff are required to undergo a mandatory background check and agree to the terms and conditions
of BSSC’s Code of Conduct (COC) - and is always mindful that all staff and participants are adhering to the
same standards of behavior set forth in the COC document. BSSC staff are required to attend staff orientation
that includes Sexual Harassment Prevention and Implicit Bias training programs. The BSSC has a zero
tolerance policy for drugs a during work hours. Any such use during the workday or during a trip with
participants will result in immediate termination of the employment contract and suspension of further
payments/salary from the Boothbay Sea and Science Center.

Each topic includes weather, basic boating and sailing skills, local marine life, and responsible marine
stewardship.


6/26: The Sea That We See
Learn through the voices of artists, musicians, and storytellers that celebrate the sea through their trade,
music, and sea tales. Work side by side with artists discover with our eyes our individual “point of view”.

7/3: All Hands-on Deck
Explore the history of Shipbuilding in Maine and beyond by talking with boat designers and shipwrights.
Learn sailing techniques and seamanship skills necessary for collecting scientific data in and around Linekin
Bay and Boothbay Harbor.

7/10: Life Down on the Edge of the Rise
Investigate how geology, weather, and climate change over time and how these changes impact the
organisms and plant life living in local waters and in the Gulf of Maine. Explore solutions for Maine coastal
communities.

7/17: Do Rising Tides Lift All Boats
Measure and record rising sea levels and their impact on our living shoreline, erosion, and the ocean’s
ecosystem. Talk about the impact on the fishing industry and what it creates for working waterfront.

7/24: Weight and Sea
Explore different technologies that help solve the problem of plastics in the ocean. Work with an artist who
uses marine debris as her medium. Conduct research by investigating currents, towing for microplastics, and
tracking trash in the local waters and on a nearby island.

7/31: Getting Carried Away
Explore where marine debris comes from and where it goes. Interview people about their plastic usage at
nearby beaches, restaurants, and the Transfer Station. Create “trash stories”.

8/7; Inside the Secret Garden
Recording the vegetation and sea life in the Damariscotta River, Back River, Kennebec River, Linekin Bay,
Boothbay Harbor. Discuss what we do on and off the water and its impact on natural habitats.

8/14: Meeting the Farmers
Learn from fisherman, aquaculturists, and scientist about the effects of growing oysters, mussels, and
seaweed on the ocean and the air we breathe. Talk about the laws governing the sea farming and fishing
industries and what the impact of the support from coastal communities has on Maine fisheries.
